Toothless Crochet Hat

Little boys can be just as imaginative as little girls, but it seems a lot harder to come up with boy “dress up” clothes. So when I heard my nephew loved Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, I decided to make him a Toothless outfit for his Birthday.

I drew up a basic pattern for the wings and made them out of felt. I added green top stitching to make them look dragon-like and put strips of elastic at the shoulders and wrist so Jacksen could soar around and spread his dragon wings out wide with no fear of them falling off.

I crocheted the hat using a basic pattern and making up some of my own parts. This outfit was easy to make up and perfect for an imaginative little boy.

For the basic hat pattern I used a pattern from Repeat Crafter Me. Her patterns are super easy to follow and she has so many cute hats!

Once the hat is done you get to put “Toothless” together.

Fasten off leaving long tail to sew on. Fill with extra yarn or small amount of poly-fil.

Eyes (make 2):
In green yarn: Chain 6, turn
Row 1: Starting in first chain from hook, HDC across (10 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 2: HDC in second chain from stitch, HDC across (5 total), chain 1, turn
Row 3: 2 HDC in first stitch, 1 HDC in next 3 stitches, 2 HDC in last stitch (7 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 4: 2 HDC in first stitch, 1 HDC in next 5 stitches, 2 HDC in last stitch (9 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 5: 2 HDC in first stitch, 1 HDC in next 7 stitches, 2 HDC in last stitch (11 HDC), chain 1, turn
Row 6: HDC decrease, HDC in next 7, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 7: HDC decrease, HDC in next 5, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 8: HDC decrease, HDC in next 3, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 9: HDC decrease, HDC in next 1, HDC decrease, chain 1, turn
Row 10: HDC decrease, HDC decrease, chain 1

Sew all the pieces on to the hat and weave in the ends. After you sew on the green eyes take a long piece of black yarn to make the pupil. Starting at a point on the bottom sew a big stitch halfway up the eye continually returning to the starting point and going wider across the top until you get the look you want.
