Its the final week of Project Run and Play and it’s the Signature Style Theme!
My “signature style” is anything pink, sparkly, with frills of lace…. but that doesn’t exactly go with a little boy. When it comes to little boys I love seeing them all dressed up. My mom loves heirloom outfits and smocking so I decided to go off of that and smock an outfit for my baby. When my mom told me she had a smocking plate of little lizards I knew that was what I wanted to make for my baby.
A few years ago I wasn’t sure if I ever wanted to have kids. But then I had the opportunity to do a study-abroad internship in Samoa where we taught the kids how to prevent Rheumatic Heart Disease.
After spending two weeks with the happiest kids I have ever seen, my heart was melted and I knew that all I wanted in life was to be a mom, and especially a mom of boys.
I turned those lizards into Geckos (who knows the difference anyway) to represent the ones we had running around our rooms in Samoa.
I used a bright plaid of blues and greens to reflect the bright colors of the Samoan children’s school uniforms. I put the smocking into short overalls to help this baby boy enjoy the outdoors this summer and play as happily as the Samoan children do.
As I made this outfit and considered my “signature style” I realized that yes I love making fancy clothes, but I also like making play clothes. I love making things for my baby and seeing his happy face as I talk to him and tell him the new things we will do that day. I love watching him concentrate as he tries new things and learns to roll over. I love his excitement every morning as he realizes its a new day. And more than anything, I just love being with him. Because my real signature style is just MOM.
This is awesome! I’ve always wanted to try smocking 🙂
I have been completely enjoying your son’s facial expressions on all your pr&p posts!
